THOMAS LISTER, HALIFAX. A RARE GEORGE III MUSICAL WORLD TIME LONGCASE CLOCK, the figured mahogany case with toleware mounted swan neck pediment and enamel portrait paterae above a glazed arched door flanked by inlaid brass mounted Corinthian columns the trunk with matching columns and crossbanded door on inlaid base and ogee bracket feet, the 14" arched brass dial having foliate engraved spandrels and silvered Roman chapter ring surrounding a finely engraved silvered centre with calendar aperture, and subsidiary dials for tune selection and seconds dial. In the arch a finely painted lunar disc depicting a river scene, and moving around the arch a world-time ring bears the names of places around the world. The position of these names in relation to the Roman numerals of the 24-hour dial shows their local time. On either sides are tabs indicating the times of sunrise and sunset, these rise and fall with the seasons. The substantial three train weight driven movement plays one of seven different tunes every four hours changing at midnight on ten bells and large pin barrel. - The clock was sold by auction in Huddersfield 1953 from the estate of Holywell Hall for £72. The clock is also illustrated in 'The Thomas Lister, Clockmakers' book by C.H. Rycroft, F.B.H.I. Comes with the book, and a copy of the newspaper clipping dated 1953.
