MILES WEDRED (WETHERHEAD), KIRKBY LONSDALE  A fine mid 18th Century dense figured Cuban Mahogany eight day LONGCASE CLOCK the cabinet work undoubtedly by Gillows of Lancaster the 12” arched brass and silvered dial with engraved star-spangled revolving moon phases above a Roman chapter ring with Arabic minute markings enclosing a partly matted centre dial with florally cut engraved date aperture, ringed winding holes and seconds dial above marked Tempus Fugit; the eight day double lead weight driven movement with finely turned and finned baluster pillars, smooth barrels and hourly rack strike on a large bell. The finely coloured and richly patinated case with swan neck pediment to the hood and carved flower head patras, turned side columns and quarter columns to the case enclosing a panelled full length door with finely carved fanned and leaf work mask head to the top; the canted base on bold ogee moulded feet 236cm high, trunk width 34.5cm, depth of base 26cm excluding feet *Ref: Clockmakers of Northern England by Brian Loomes pgs 278/9 for details on this maker. *Clock cases of this type are discussed at length by Susan Stewart in her two volumes titled GILLOWS of Lancaster and London pgs 388-413 see plate 479.
