A FINE MID 19TH CENTURY GILT BRASS FRENCH ROCOCO REPEATING CARRIAGE CLOCK WITH ALARM OF SMALL SIZE - THE CASE WITH MAKERS STAMP TO THE BASE PLATE S.WEHL. ST. PETERSBURG the highly ornate cast and finished case enclosing a floral engraved masked enamel dial and subsidiary alarm with blue chapter ring enclosed by floral swags. The eight-day spring-driven movement with original lever balance wheel escapement, striking the hours and half hours on a bell - with original Moroccan tan leather travelling case and keys. Samuel Wehl, a bronzesmith active in St. Petersburg in the 1840s and famous for producing cases for mantelpiece clocks. Wehl's clocks were often executed in the French style and were much sought after by his wealthy Russian clientele.
