Find answers to common questions about valuing, buying and selling Chinese and Japanese ceramics, bronzes and Asian works of art with Hutchinson Scott.
How can I get Oriental ceramics or Asian art valued?
Request an initial valuation through our online service. Include clear photographs of the complete object, base, underside, interior, marks and inscriptions, together with dimensions, condition and known provenance.
What types of Oriental ceramics and works of art do you sell?
Our auctions can include Chinese and Japanese porcelain, bronzes, cloisonné, lacquer, jade, carved hardwood, mixed-metal sculpture and other Asian decorative works.
What affects the value of Chinese or Japanese ceramics?
Age, rarity, form, decoration, glaze, marks, quality, originality, condition, provenance and current demand can all influence an auction valuation.
Are reign marks important on Chinese porcelain?
Marks can be useful evidence, but they must be considered alongside the porcelain, glaze, decoration, construction, age and provenance. A mark alone does not confirm an object's date.
Which Japanese makers and traditions are of interest?
Demand varies by category and condition. Hutchinson Scott has sold works associated with Miyao, Ishikawa Komei, Masatsune and Juzan, as well as Meiji bronze, Satsuma, Imari and cloisonné.
Should I clean or restore an Asian antique before valuation?
No. Avoid cleaning, polishing, repairing or restoring an object before seeking advice. Original surfaces, patination, mounts and old repairs can be important to its value.
What photographs are useful for a valuation?
Photograph the front, back, sides, top, base and interior, plus close-ups of decoration, marks, signatures, labels, damage, restoration and accompanying stands or cases.
Can I sell one piece or an entire collection?
Yes. Suitable individual objects, matched groups and private or inherited collections of Oriental ceramics and Asian art may all be considered for auction following an initial valuation.
Do your Oriental art auctions reach international buyers?
Yes. Illustrated online catalogues and internet bidding give Chinese and Japanese ceramics and works of art exposure to collectors, dealers and specialist buyers across the UK and overseas.
