JAMES GRAY OF SHASTON (SHAFTESBURY) A RARE LATE 17TH CENTURY PROVINCIAL BRASS LANTERN CLOCK

A RARE LATE 17TH CENTURY PROVINCIAL BRASS LANTERN CLOCK BY JAMES GRAY OF SHASTON (SHAFTESBURY), circa 1690–1695, with strapped bell surmounted by an urn finial above pierced dolphin and foliate frets, the posted frame with integral Bristol-type pillar castings and turned corner columns raised on ball feet. The 6¼-inch dial with silvered Roman chapter ring, trident-form half-hour markers and engraved centre depicting tulip flowers issuing from a vase, signed above ‘James Gray Shaston’ and fitted with a cast brass hand, fronting a weight-driven movement with verge escapement, outside countwheel strike on the bell and rear-swinging pendulum, come with the original weight.

Illustrated in W. F. J. Hana, English Lantern Clocks, Plate 42, p.74, where it was incorrectly described as Scottish; subsequently identified by Brian Loomes as the work of James Gray of Shaston. Accompanied by the original photograph supplied for Hana’s publication, bearing the ownership stamp of Gerald E. Marsh, together with a copy of the book.
