DANIEL QUARE, LONDON. A FINE AND IMPORTANT QUEEN ANNE MONTH GOING QUARTER CHIMING MULBERRY VENEERED LONGCASE CLOCK CIRCA 1700 the well-proportioned case having a caddy top pediment with pierced sound fret surmounted by three brass ball finials, matching pierced sound fret to the frieze above a glazed door flanked by brass-capped turned columns on a slender trunk with moulded edge door and box base raised on a double plinth. The 12" gilt brass dial with foliate engraved border between gilt cherub head spandrels, Roman and Arabic silvered chapter ring surrounding a matted centre with ringed winding holes below a calendar aperture and subsidiary seconds dial fronting a substantial three train weight driven month duration movement with seven finned latched pillars and outside countwheel striking the hours on a bell and the quarters on two bells; the backplate mounted with a bracket to secure the movement to the backboard - comes with original brass cased weights and pendulum.

Daniel Quare. (1648 - 1724) rose from obscure and apparently humble origins in Somerset to become one of the most illustrious clockmakers of England's golden age of horology. On the 3rd April 1671 he was admitted brother of the clockmaker's company in 1680 he was working in Exchange alley at the centre of London's business community and probably worked there until the time of his death. He worked his way up in the clockmaker's company to become master in 1708.
