EARDLEY NORTON, ST JOHN’S STREET, LONDON. A GEORGE III FIGURED MAHOGANY LONGCASE CLOCK the fret-cut embellished pagoda top hood with brass finial surmounts above brass stop-reeded side columns and glazed side viewing windows; the trunk with matching quarter columns and long arch-top door on a clipped panelled base and stepped double plinth moulding. The 12" arched brass dial with Rococo spandrels, silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring, matted centre and subsidiary seconds dial, date box and Strike/Silent dial to the arch with the signature strip above. The substantial 8-day movement with five baluster pillars, anchor escapement with semi- dead beat escapement and the hourly strike on a bell; with pull repeat.

Eardley Norton, a most highly esteemed member of the Clockmakers’ Company, was working between 1762 and 1794. There are clocks by him in the Royal Collection and many museums worldwide. Norton made an astronomical clock for George III which still stands in Buckingham Palace.
