AN ITALIAN GRAND TOUR LATE 19TH CENTURY ALABASTER FIGURE after the antique Augustus of Prima Porta statue, depicting Augustus Caesar with right arm raised, the intricately carved breastplate (cuirass) depicts a Parthian figure returning military standards to a Roman, symbolising Augustus' diplomatic success and the establishment of peace, having a rustic outcrop to the base with a putto at his feet. - The first emperor of the Roman Empire. Found in 1863 at the villa of prima porta near Rome. The figure is now displayed in the Vatican museum.
