A FINE FRENCH GILT BRASS AND CHAMPLEVE ENAMELLED FOUR-GLASS MANTEL CLOCK GARNITURE RETAILED BY WILLIAM BATTY AND SON, MANCHESTER the circular two train eight day bell striking movement with large gilt disc-bob pendulum decorated in polychrome enamel and fitted with Brocot-type suspension regulation; the backplate stamped with the H P & Co. diamond lozenge trademark, serial number 3716 to the left margin and 5 9 to the base. The gilt dial with visible Brocot deadbeat escapement beneath a scroll-form bridge, set to a red enamel rosette-centred ground with cobalt-blue zig-zag border and inscribed W’m Batty & Son, Manchester to the recessed centre; the Roman numeral chapter ring with steel spade hands within a canted surround richly decorated with polychrome enamel scrollwork. The rectangular bevel-glazed case surmounted by a twin-handled urn, raised upon a cushion-shaped top panel with blue strapwork borders and leafy sprays to the rounded edges and applied with stylised anthemion and scroll mounts, with hinged front and rear glazed doors flanked by rounded angles decorated with symmetrical polychrome enamel scroll motifs, the sides with fixed glass panels; raised on geometric turned supports with anthemion scroll ornament, terminating in paw-and-ball feet. Together with a pair of matching twin-handled octagonal urn side pieces, each with concave enamelled covers, repeating foliate and strapwork decoration, and raised on facetted oblong bases with turned feet.
