EARDLEY NORTON, LONDON. AN IMPOSING GEORGE III MAHOGANY AND BRASS MOUNTED THREE TRAIN BRACKET CLOCK OF UNUSUALLY LARGE SIZE LARGE the stepped bell-top flame veneered case with figural surmount, brass centre mould and flambe corner finials above engraved foliated fret-cut panels and ornate brass scroll and flowering leaf work canted corner mounts, side carrying handles and moulded plinth base. 9.5-inch arched brass dial with foliated gilt spandrels, signed silvered Roman chapter ring with outer Arabic minute markings and inner concentric calendar work with brass indicator, matted centre and blued steel hands with strike/silent subsidiary dial to the arch. The substantial three train gut-driven fusee movement with ringed pillars, verge escapement with bob pendulum, hour strike on a single bell and quarter-hour strike on a series of eight graduated bells - with pull repeat lever. The fine all over engraved backplate depicting scrolling foliated designs and a central flower basket above an oval cartouche signed EARDLEY NORTON LONDON.

Eardley Norton, a most highly esteemed member of the Clockmakers’ Company, was working between 1762 and 1794. There are clocks by him in the Royal Collection and many museums worldwide. Norton made an astronomical clock for George III which still stands in Buckingham Palace.
