EX. ELGIN WATCH COMPANY RIEFLER OBSERVATORY REGULATOR CLOCK

EX. ELGIN WATCH COMPANY RIEFLER OBSERVATORY REGULATOR CLOCK, An historically important observatory wall regulator by Riefler that was one of the timekeepers of the Elgin National Watch Company of Illinois. The surviving Riefler company records show that it was supplied to Elgin on 18.10.1909 Elgin had 4 Rieflers, 2 were tank models that they used in their observatory, the other 2 were wall mounted wood and glass cased models that were both sited in the factory. Serial Number 237 which is this clock, was one of those. A classic wall mounted Riefler it has a fully glazed, hinged cover that can be fully swung open and then lifted off so that easy access can be gained to make adjustments to the movement. The precision jewelled movement sits on a cast iron support that itself is supported by a separate cast iron wall mount. The movement features Riefler's patented spring impulse escapement with double escape wheels and large jewelled pallets. The pendulum is a Type J No.781 and has the rare barometric compensation unit attached. The separate wooden backboard is of satin birch and is independent of the wall plate so that any knocks the case receives are not transferred to the movement. The movement has an electrically re-set remontoire that acts on the 3rd wheel. The regulator format dial is signed S.Riefler München D.R.P.50739 D.R.P.100870 No.237 1908

More images have now been uploaded. The clock was acquired from a private collector, along with several others. When we collected the clock, it was ticking in the gentleman's study. I believe it was purchased many years ago from Derek Roberts. It is in very nice original condition with no losses or damage. Unfortunately, we don't have it running in the sale and haven't tested it for timekeeping. It hasn't been serviced for some time.
